The WTBS is very paranoid. For years they would not let us use cordless phones to discuss elder or judicial matters for fear of someone else overhearing, then they prohibited cell phones for the same issues. It took years to allow anything, even something as simple as a book study list or the TMS schedule to be created or stored on a computer. Cordless microphones, fax machines, office copy machines, e mails all were equally vilified. Today they have come a long way in using modern technology but it would shock me if they have anything incriminating on file electronically and I am sure the ‘special little list’ that they keep is only on paper and always under lock and key.

I had to laugh when I saw this thread. In one of our neighboring congregations they have an ASL group that meets for a public talk once or twice a month and then they do the TMS and Book study, I mean Bible study from a WTS book, every week. The group is made up of about thirty witnesses all Pioneers, Elders and MS. They are almost all between the ages of 19 and 35. They are married with no children or they are single, and they are all the “Cool” Witnesses. You know the kind that have nice things, dress nice and can do no wrong and have no personalities. If an “uncool” pioneer or MS wants to join their group they are told that they are not taking anyone new right now.
Anyway the funny part is that not a one of these people are actually deaf. They spend their time going to meetings and in service using ASL when every single person in the group can hear. What a colossal waste of time.

I was friends with a girl who slept with everyone; she abused drugs and drank all the times. She did this from about 13 until 19ish all the while pretending to be a good little witness sister who homeschooled and pioneered. Then over night she becomes this good zealous witness. It was weird because it literally happened within a week’s time. Several years later she is still pioneering and pretends that she has never done anything wrong.

For Lurkers and Newbies, "How Are Kingdom Hall Elders Appointed By The Holy Spirit?"
by Bubblegum Apotheosis inas previously requested by a fellow jwn, i will post a topic about "jw stuff", so "newbies, lurkers and recently bittered souls" are able to discern how the watchtower society's statement about "elders being appointed by holy spirit" is not true.. according to the holy bible, these are the requirements for being appointed an elder by men, men who are suppose to observe if their hand picked elder is obeying god's word.. 1 timothy 3 "living bible translation".
"3 this is a trustworthy saying: "if someone aspires to be an elder,[a] he desires an honorable position.
" 2 so an elder must be a man whose life is above reproach.

The sky fairy’s pixie dust has nothing to do with who does or does not get appointed as an elder. Basically it is based on popularity and need. I can say this with confidence based on personal experience.
I was appointed as an elder because of a need in the congregation for someone who could actually get something done. For all practical purposes I was a knowledgeable ‘brother’ who was moderate and liked by most of the congregation. I even was able to give talks at the circuit level and toward the end of my time as an elder, at the District level.
The real kicker is that I have been an atheist since my early teens. I pretty much did and still do whatever I want using caution and common sense to avoid conflict. I only stayed in the organization because of my parents and then family.
On the other hand, I saw brothers who sincerely wanted to ‘do what’s right’ get railroaded just because they were unpopular with the majority of the serving elders. Many times those serving elders would lie just to get there way.
So yeah there is nothing to indicate the existence of Holy Spirit in directing the appointment of men in the congregation.

What exactly is a relasionship with God?
by tootired2care ingrowing up and jw and being around them all my life i constantly heard the expression "a relasionship with god".
this always confused me, because how do you have a relasionship with someone that doesn't talk back to you after praying?
this was always rationalized as god talks back to you when you read the bible.

I have to agree with Talesin and maybe just add that you have to give that imaginary friend all the credit for every good thing that happens to you in your life, no matter how hard you worked to achieve them because he made all good things happen but you must take full credit for all of the bad things because those things are all your fault.

the truth is mine
The service meeting for this week was almost entirely made up of questions based on the DVD Faith In Action PT1. I had never watched it previous to this part but I decided to suffer through the 63 min of BS just to compare what I know about the WBTS true history and the history that they present in the DVD. I was amazed at how easily they distorted Russell’s expectations for 1914, how he arrived at that date and what he thought it truly meant. They also distorted the events that followed Russell’s death and Rutherford’s takeover of the organization.
Have any of you suffered through this DVD? If so any specific parts that were totally distorted and how?
Thanks for your thoughts.

I just remembered that when I gave the not so special talk a couple of years ago they had a short letter that had to be read after the talk that invited people to study to learn more and be fully indoctranated. That is probably what the short letter refered to here:
The reading of this letter is in addition to the shorter announcement to be read by the chairman
immediately following the special talk as outlined in the letter dated February 1, 2012, to all
bodies of elders. Therefore, the chairman will read the shorter announcement following the special
talk and before the Watchtower Study.

The annointed remnant figure rising - a question
by jambon1 inhaving been out of the loop for a while on here, it dawned on me that the figure of memorial partakers has risen substantially from when i was a jw.. i think i bowed out at around 8500 in 2006.. can anyone briefly explain what the main reasons for this increase are and if it is ever discussed among jw's because if i remember correctly, the figure should be going down, not up.. thanks.. j.

After the memorial last night this subject came up among some of the elders. I found it interesting that they were blaming it on the memorial invitations. It seems they think that all the new partakers are those who respond to the invite and do not realize that they are not supposed to be cracker munching. But it seems to me that the increase started a few years before the invitations were given out?
